What is over-discharge? What are the effects on the battery?

Over-discharge refers to the phenomenon that the battery is discharged to a voltage lower than the termination voltage. Over-discharge will have the following adverse effects on the battery:

  • Over-utilization of active materials, resulting in decreased battery capacity.

  • Generate too much or too much lead sulfate, destroy the PbO2 skeleton, causing fracture, or unable to be reduced during recharging, resulting in reduced capacity.

  • In severe cases, it can even cause short circuit and even explosion of the battery after over-discharge, so it should be avoided as much as possible.

Causes of over-discharge

The causes of over-discharge are as follows:

  • The battery is not fully charged before use.

  • The battery is used for a long time without being recharged.

  • The battery is used in a high-current environment.

Prevention of over-discharge

To prevent over-discharge, the following measures can be taken:

  • Fully charge the battery before use.

  • Do not use the battery for a long time without being recharged.

  • Use the battery in a low-current environment.

  • Use a battery with a over-discharge protection circuit.

How to deal with over-discharge

If the battery is over-discharged, the following measures can be taken:

  • Immediately stop using the battery.

  • Recharge the battery as soon as possible.

  • If the battery cannot be recharged, replace the battery.
